That Boutique-y Gin Co. - Moonshot Gin
Moonshot Gin is the latest release from That Boutique-y Gin Co. They are the first independent gin bottler and specialise in quirky, experimental products. To learn about the launch of the company, please click here.
On 7th March 2017, That Boutique-y Gin Co. sent botanicals into near-space under the guidance of Sent Into Space. “Near-space” is at an altitude of over 24km where the air pressure falls to less than 1/100th that at sea level. To put this into perspective, the Armstrong Limit, (where humans would vaporise) comes into effect at 1/16th… The temperature reached -60˚C with the whole escapade taking just over two hours.
Why did they send the botanicals to near-space? Quite simply, why not? No-one had done it before and it sounded fun – which is exactly the mindset That Boutique-y Gin Co. embodies. However, this is still a gin.
Fresh Lemon Peel
Dried Bitter Orange
I’m not convinced about the use of moon rock, but going with the theme it makes sense.
Once the botanicals have safely recovered from their journey into the atmosphere, they are vacuum-distilled, (at pressures of 1/10th) at room temperature.
Moonshot Batch 1 was released in April to great excitement. As such, further botanicals have been sent skyward to produce Batch 2.
Batch 1 Tasting Note
Aromas: Rich, deep and refined. Not hugely pronounced, but good juniper, earthy spice and a touch of citrus.
Palate: A smooth, rich texture. Soft spiced orange over a juniper core with gentle cardamom on the finish. A nice creaminess. I'm not getting the moon rock though...
With Tonic: Bold earthy damp citrus with a touch of herbaceousness. A juicy citrus note throughout, but I preferred this neat.
You can’t fault That Boutique-y Gin Co. for their adventurism and pushing the boundaries of drinks. Whilst these antics and experiments could be viewed flippantly, it’s important to stress the fact that this is good gin.
This isn’t just for fun, it’s for drinking.
