The Gin Lane 1751 range of products take their name from the famous set of Gin Acts which were introduced during Britain’s first Gin Craze.

The Bloomsbury Club is group of passionate drinks industry veterans. They decided to create their own range of gins “with historical accuracy and relevance to the Victorian era.”

Produced at Thames Distillery by eighth-generation Master Distiller, Charles Maxwell, (in collaboration with The Bloomsbury Club) Gin Lane 1751 have recently added an Old Tom style gin and a Pink Gin to their portfolio.

Pink Gin
The origins of Pink Gin return to the Royal Navy, as with many gin developments. The addition of Angostura Bitters to the sailors’ ration of gin was said to combat malaria and seasickness whilst conveniently balancing the dry, sometimes austere nature of the gin itself.

To make a classic Pink Gin cocktail, you would put a dash of Angostura Bitters in your glass, swirl them around to coat the surface and discard any excess liquid before adding your gin. Gin Lane 1751 have taken their popular London Dry gin recipe and added a hint of spiced bitters, creating a pre-made version of a Pink Gin.

Tasting Note
Aromas:
Quite subtle. A touch of black pepper with damp juniper stalk.

Palate: Definitive sweet orange characteristics with earthy spice underneath. A little bit hot on the palate for 40%, but leads to a nice dry tangy spiced finish.

Old Tom Gin
There are many versions detailing the history and development of the Old Tom style of gin, all of which have their roots in gin’s notorious black-market trade.

The main aspect is that an Old Tom gin is a sweeter style than London Dry. Historically, sugar, honey or liquorice were added to mask the unpalatable base gin.

Today, Old Tom gins tend to fall into two classifications: those simply sweetened and those using botanicals to create an ‘illusion’ of sweetness.

Gin Lane 1751’s sweetness is achieved botanically by upping the percentage of star anise in the recipe and by the inclusion of refined sugarcane.

Tasting Note
Aromas:
Soft and subtle. Bright green sweet angelica and liquorice bark with a touch of ginger root underneath.

Palate: Rich, though a little hot. Subtle juniper and black pepper with lovely gentle cardamom and star anise sweetness behind. 

Conclusion
I’m impressed with the whole range of Gin Lane 1751’s products. It is fascinating to take the same eight botanicals, (juniper, orris root, angelica,  Seville orange, Sicilian lemon, star anise, cassia bark and coriander) and delicately manipulate the recipe to create a London Dry, a Navy Strength and an Old Tom whilst maintaining a core style across the range.
