Bolney Portfolio Tasting
Bolney Wine Estate is situated in West Sussex and comprises 15.8 hectares of vines spread over five distinct vineyard sites.
In 1972, Rodney and Janet Pratt planted the first 1.2 hectares. Their daughter, Sam Lintner took over managing the estate and becoming winemaker in the mid-1990s. Today, she is joined by Liz Garrett as Head Winemaker, (both of whom studied at Plumpton College).
Sam and her family have worked tirelessly to produce wines of outstanding quality whilst maintaining an element of experimentation and development in relation to grape varieties planted and production methods.
To celebrate the launch of their new vintage, Bolney hosted an event in London, showcasing much of their portfolio, including some library stock, (older vintages) and a vertical tasting.
Stellar PR organised the event held in the gorgeous location of the new Wine Pantry in Borough Market and kindly invited me along. I was amazed at how many expressions of Bolney wines there are. It was a treat to be able to taste through the range and to have members of staff on hand to answer any questions.
I especially love vertical tastings and was not disappointed with a line-up of Blanc de Blancs from 2009 to 2015. The 2009 was absolutely stunning.
Bright, gently stewed apple aromas. Vibrant crisp green apple and lemon zest on the palate with great acidity.
Elegant, round apricot kernel aromas. Full, rich and earthy. Tangy nectarine flavours with a very long finish.
Rich, almost savoury earthy notes. Complex shortbread, gingerbread and tertiary characters over crisp apple.
A gentle hint of smoke with soft apple. A lively mouthfeel.
Floral – peach blossom and rose petal aromas. A soft, smooth texture; rich and creamy.
Rich, elegant and nuanced. Sweet meadow flowers and fresh citrus.
I was also very impressed with their Bolney Bubbly – a blend of Müller Thurgau, Reichensteiner and Chardonnay.
Bolney have collaborated with KEW Gardens to create four new wines: KEW English White and KEW English Rosé with still and sparkling versions. The label designs are beautiful and the liquid is equally praiseworthy.
Huge thanks go to the teams at Stellar PR and Bolney Wine Estate for organising this portfolio tasting and for inviting me. It was a delight to try so many of the products in one place and to witness everybody’s passion first-hand.
